The Rum House – In the tiki room

It’s kind of hard to go to a place called The Rum House and not order rum. The second location for this New Orleans-based restaurant and bar recently opened to swarms of fans on Perkins Road, and the cocktail menu is brimming with sweet, rummy tiki drinks and even rum flights for the casual enthusiast ($8-$20) or the connoisseur ($60-$150 for some rarer rums).

But our taste buds centered in on the housemade sangria—not often seen on local menus—which comes by the glass ($6.50) or the carafe ($24). The Rum House’s version is made with red wine, brown sugar and tropical fruits, as well as the Grand Marnier-like liqueur Clement Creole Shrubb, which just so happens to be rum-based.

The purple-hued sangria was adorned with an orange slice, though I would’ve appreciated some chunks of those fresh tropical fruits, which made an appearance for our photo shoot. Still, the taste was just right for a summer day—refreshing, yet not too sweet. At a restaurant that has the casual, easy feel of a marina-side fisherman’s bar, this sangria adds a classy touch. rumhousenola.com
