Trying on vintage

Dressing for the day, without a special occasion, truly is a lost art.

The problem is people either attempt to reinvent their style or think they have no sense for it and don’t try.

My first trip through a thrift store was overwhelming, but since then, I’ve had many years to study up on dressing vintage. One key is to know what you’re looking for in order to avoid overbuying.

For beginners, I suggest small, local boutiques. They have an amazing array of affordable clothing and accessories, and most of the pieces are unique, especially those from vintage specialists like my favorite, Time Warp.

The associates there will give you undivided attention, especially if you ask questions. So don’t be shy!

Remember that vintage items are not just for costumes. Mixing newer accessories with a great vintage outfit can really update a timeless look. For fall, I’ll be pulling out my capes, fur scarves, cashmere sweaters and fabulous gloves.

The following photo spread is just a taste of some fun recent finds. Let them inspire your own adventures in thrifting for great looks for morning, noon and night.
