Roemer names Lieberman as his VP favorite

Republican presidential candidate and former Louisiana Gov. Buddy Roemer announced today that Connecticut Sen. Joe Lieberman would be his first choice for a vice presidential running mate. In a statement, Roemer says the senator's "reputation as a reformer and a man of integrity is unrivaled in American politics. … Ours are similar stories. We are both public servants who switched political parties. We both understand that we have to change the very nature of our political system, that campaign finance reform is sorely needed, and that corruption is a real problem in Washington, D.C." Roemer says the ticket would "transcend partisanship," which he blames for legislative gridlock and public frustration with politics. Roemer's campaign manager, Carlos Sierra, says that the endorsement is not implying that Lieberman would necessarily accept or desire the nomination, but simply that Roemer thinks highly of the senator. "Our purpose is to get people thinking about a different approach to politics," Sierra says in the statement. Considered a long shot by political analysts, Roemer has framed himself as a bipartisan leader and an advocate for removing special-interest money from the political process.
