Myrna Arroyo set out to bring something different to Prairieville. Quitting her job as a lawyer, she opened Roux Wine and Spirits on Airline Highway in late summer 2011. With around 35 wines by the glass rotating on the menu, the selection stays fresh and enticing. In addition, Arroyo operates under retail and on-premise alcohol licenses, meaning you can buy a bottle of wine off the shelf at the retail price and drink it onsite for a small corkage fee. But the shop also boasts one of the best cheese plates in the city, procured from the St. James Cheese Company, which opened in New Orleans in 2006. Arroyo calls St. James a “cheese wonderland,” and it's easy to see why. Richard and Danielle Sutton began their cheese careers in a 200-year-old cheese shop in the St. James neighborhood of London called Paxton & Whitfield. Back near Baton Rouge, Roux Wine and Spirits offers eight of their cheeses all the time and sometimes a few more. You can order cheese and charcuterie plates garnished with olives, fruit and crackers by selections of one ($6), three ($13) and five ($18). And of course, you can always have some wine to go with that cheese.

Bad Guys, Good Eats! Pop-Up Dinner at Restaurant IPO
Chef and 225 contributor Jay D. Ducote and Chef Chris Wadsworth hosted the Bad Guys, Good Eats! dinner at Restaurant IPO Wednesday night. The dinner was themed around famous movie villains, pairing cocktails and ales with plates of food resembling famous baddies like The Joker, Lord Voldemort, Hannibal Lector, and many others. The highlights of the night were the three middle courses—a black bean soup laced with blood sausage to signify Lord Voldemort, a brace of coneys on black eyed peas resembling Sauron, and lamb medallions atop a fava bean puree to pay homage to the famous favorite of Hannibal Lector.
