New shop brings Central Grocery-style muffaletta to B.R.

What do a Baton Rouge insurance man and a speech pathology student have in common? Together they run 926-Muff, a popular new muffaletta shop on Perkins Road. Greg Town started the business last August with plans for his daughter Leigh Anne to run it when she graduates from LSU this spring.

When asked why he wanted to sell muffalettas, Town praised this quintessentially Southern creation. “It’s a great sandwich,” he says. “People are pretty passionate about a muffaletta compared to a ham sandwich.” What makes the sandwich so good? It starts with Leidenheimer bread from New Orleans that’s ordered the day before. They use the same olive mix recipe from Central Grocery piled atop Genoa salami, mortedella ham and provolone. Town says people from New Orleans hear about the store in Baton Rouge and are “compelled to try it.”

The name 926-Muff highlights both the phone number and the sandwich.

Currently marketing to a younger crowd, mainly LSU students, Town and his daughter hope to expand across Louisiana and Texas in the future. He says their new advertising methods on social media will set them apart from other muffaletta shops.

Leigh Ann works full time at the store. She is the face behind their strong presence on Facebook and Twitter, something they take pride in for bringing in customers. According to Town, they received 400 likes on Facebook in the first two weeks.

The current location of the shop used to be a snowball stand called Island Snow. Sticking with a New Orleans theme, Town says they will begin selling snowballs on March 15.

926-MUFF offers pick-up service, as well as delivery to the 70808 and LSU campus areas.
