Red Star Bar to reopen in May

Last September, downtown Baton Rouge saw one of its staples—Red Star Bar—close after more than 10 years. Fans of the bar were up in arms, wondering where they would go. An answer for those fans has come sooner rather than later.

According to an exclusive interview with 225 magazine, the bar’s first general manager and a current event promoter Gabe Daigle says Red Star will reopen in its same location at 222 Laurel St. in the middle of May. Daigle’s wife Robin and Jeff Kaufman will act as co-owners for the new Red Star Bar.

Gabe says the new Red Star will have of healthy mix of old-style atmosphere fans loved at the neighborhood watering hole and some additions.

“We’re going to bring back some of the things we did,” Gabe says. “We’re going to keep the things that everybody loved.”

However, the bar will now be a no-smoking venue, and, at first, there will be no live music. The latter could change, Gabe says, but the team wants to see Red Star be a hangout accessible for happy hour crowds that work downtown.

Gabe says patrons can expect an upgrade to the drinks menu as well as an expanded wine and cocktail program and rotated selection of beers on tap.

“I’m very excited about bringing back a downtown staple,” Gabe says. “I miss my favorite downtown bar.”
