The Dreamgirls experience

December 27, 2006
By Roderick Hawkins

Every once in awhile, something comes along to remind you that “Life’s not as bad as it may seem if you open your eyes to what’s in front of you.” I get reminded of that fact often, but on Christmas night it hit me in a major way when I saw the screen version of the historic Broadway musical, Dreamgirls. The quote above is featured in the movie. I loved the film so much that I went back Tuesday for a matinee show. This movie is phenomenal and I encourage you to see it.

I’m sure you have all heard the hype about this movie in the media. I personally have seen Dreamgirls commercials since last spring and have read about it in publications ranging from Ebony magazine to The Wall Street Journal. I’ve also checked out the Web site. But let’s not forget its stage roots, as they serve as a guide to how to watch this movie.

Dreamgirls the Musical opened on Broadway in December of 1981 and immediately became a sensation. It won six Tony awards and made stars out of Sheryl Lee Ralph, Jennifer Holiday, and Loretta Devine, the ladies who played the roles of Deena Jones, Effie White, and Lorrell Robinson, respectively. It’s a show that has stood the test of time. There have been several touring productions (one was one in Baton Rouge in 1991) and many high school, college, and community theater productions. And there is talk of a Broadway revival of the production.

One of the most memorable moments in my life occurred a few weeks ago when, while in Chicago for a weekend trip, I was fortunate enough to meet and have brunch with original Dreamgirl Sheryl Lee Ralph. She’s a stunning beauty and has a wonderful personality. She does encourage support of the film and is very proud of the cast, and she has worked with most of them. And a couple of years ago, I saw Anika Noni Rose, who plays Lorrell in the move, on Broadway in the musical, Caroline or Change. That musical was set in Lake Charles and Ms. Rose won a Tony award for her supporting role. So you see, I’ve been revved up about Dreamgirls for quite some time.

I encourage you to get excited to and to run to one of local theaters to check out this movie. Just remember: You’re not watching just any old move. You are watching an historic Broadway musical adapted for the screen. Like most musicals, much of the dialogue is sung. And take it from me: it’s alright to applaud after a song that moves you. Don’t be ashamed. And brace yourself for Jennifer Hudson as Effie White. She is absolutely outstanding! She needs to get her Golden Globe and Oscar gowns and speeches ready now.

Enjoy the show. You won’t be disappointed. With that, my friends, I wish you all a very happy New Year!
