There are few events in Baton Rouge better suited for the family than the annual hot-air balloon festival planned for the weekend of Aug. 8-10. There are a variety of events scheduled, including a balloon competition, a mass ascension of the balloons, a nighttime balloon glow, fireworks and a Children's Village. In the past years we have enjoyed a tailgating breakfast while watching the 6:30 a.m. competitions, but this year we are making plans to take in all of the nighttime festivities, including the professional parachute team performances.
Balloon competitions – Each morning starting at 6:30 you can walk around and see the balloons on the ground before takeoff then take a seat and watch the balloons in their daily competitions. This activity ends around 9 a.m., when the Baton Rouge sky is filled with color.
Children's Village – Around 3 p.m. each afternoon the festivities start back up with music, face painting, rock walls, water slides, ponies and more!
Evening activities – On Friday and Saturday evenings you will be in for a treat as approximately 30 balloons are planning to take off in the afternoon mass ascension. Also slated for these evenings are performances by the Black Daggers, a parachute team, at 6 p.m. and again at 9 p.m. The famous "balloon glow" will take place at dark, as a large group of balloons will light up the night with their flames and put on a show of light. As if that wasn't enough, you are in for a treat when the evening ends at 9:30 p.m. with fireworks!
Make your plans to attend and enjoy one of Baton Rouge's greatest weekend family events.
