For years I have been taking my girls to discount hair salons to have their hair cut. Maybe it was the accountant in me, but I couldn't justify spending almost double the amount to have their hair cut at a "children's boutique salon." However, curiosity got the best of me and after the recent opening of yet another salon catering to little ones, I just had to see what all the fuss was about.
I remember hearing years ago, when Baton Rouge had only one kid's salon, that an appointment was required and needed to be made weeks in advance. I am happy to report that this is no longer the case since competition has increased. The most recent salon, Pigtails & Crewcuts in Towne Center, doesn't even take appointments. In all cases we were able to make an appointment just a few days in advance and at Pigtails & Crewcuts we only waited five minutes on a Saturday morning. I especially like the reservation system at Belles & Beaus, since they sent me an e-mail reminder about the "fun cut" several hours before the appointment!
As for cost, the haircuts were about $5 more per child than the discount salon we have been using for years. What do you get for the premium price? Well, your children can play a video game or watch a movie while having their hair cut, and should you have to wait or have other little ones with you, the waiting room ROCKS! There are toys, trains, comfy furniture -- you get the picture. One salon even had a "treasure chest" to reward the kids at the end of the cut. Of course, the most important thing is that I found the haircut to be better.
So where will we be going for our haircuts from now on? My kids voted for Belles & Beaus, and they won my vote, too. The hair stylist was very helpful with recommending products for my summer swimmers and very attentive to the children. So there it is: I am sold on the children's salon concept and look forward to our next fun cut!
