When people think of festivals they generally think of celebrations centered on music, great food and even rides. However, one of the best festivals hosted by our state focuses on books! Doesn't sound very exciting? Well, it is. Just take a peak at the Louisiana Book Festival and you will see that this festival makes books and writing fun! The sixth-annual Louisiana Book Festival takes place on Saturday, Oct. 4 downtown along the State Library of Louisiana, the Louisiana State Museum, the Capitol and other surrounding streets. If that sounds like a large area, it has to be because there will be over 100 authors there talking about their books, signing copies and conducting related activities. There is a Young Readers Pavilion that will have professional storytellers, face-painting and crafts, and programs for the different ages focusing on topics like early literacy and young writers.
One of my favorite features of the Web site is the ability to locate your favorite author and find out where they will be during the festival and what they will be doing. Our family favorite is Johnette Downing, a great musician, author and storyteller from New Orleans. We have been following her for years and cannot wait to hear her storytelling and purchase her latest children's book at the festival.
This is Louisiana, so of course there will be great music and food available. Admission to the festival is free, and I encourage you to check out the Web site for information on parking. Also, there will be some adult workshops and book club discussions related to the festival during the weekend. Most of these require advance registration, so you may want to make plans to attend.
