Families on the Geaux

Move over Jonas Brothers

I am a huge music lover, from Broadway to karaoke. If a beat is involved, you can generally count me in. However, I have to admit that while toddlers marching and banging on pots and pans puts a smile on my face, some of the musicians that are "all the rage" make me cringe at the lack of pure music talent. They may be great entertainers and in many instances that is what appeals more to Americans, but musicians they are not! If you are looking for an awesome young band with true talent, don't bother checking out the latest Disney craze. Instead, listen to the music of Solar Heat, a Baton Rouge band made up of three brothers: a 16-year-old and 13-year-old twins.

These young guys have it all; they sing, play the drums, guitar AND write songs. They even have super supportive and proud parents to lead the fan club! Oh, and girls, did I mention that they are cute? They are! They have played in small local establishments for the past several years, and this past summer played their biggest gig yet as the opening band at Blue Bayou for Vanessa Hudgens.

I am so excited—but not surprised—that this band is getting such support from the community. In fact, this month they will be releasing their first CD and celebrating with a party at LaCarreta Mexican Restaurant on Government Street. The party is set for Sunday, Sept. 28 from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Families are encouraged to bring their children and enjoy the music and food. There will also be door prizes, CD signings and special giveaways during the night. Of course, the real treat will be saying, "I knew them when they were just starting out!"

Congratulations to CJ, Cody and Mack for the hard work required to make a dream like this come true.
