Baton Rouge favorites we wish were open on Sunday

Editor’s note: The print version of this story also listed Manship Theatre. We were incorrect; the Manship does have shows on Sundays—meaning you can add some ballet, live jazz and foreign films to your Sunday lineup.

Everybody deserves a break, but sometimes it feels like a lot our favorite things just aren’t open on that magical last day of the weekend. If we could design our ideal Sunday Funday, we’d throw in some stops at these Baton Rouge favorites that are currently closed for business on Sunday.

Baum’s Bakery
Look, Sundays are sacred for more than just religious reasons. It’s also a day of leisurely midday feasts, lazing around the house before another week of work and indulging your sweet tooth before you head back to the gym on Monday. It’d be a little sweeter if we could slouch on the couch with a box of éclairs and a doberge cake from Baum’s.

Rustic Italian restaurants
If you’re longing for the home-cooked Sunday dinners of your childhood, picking up some hearty Italian would ease the homesickness a little bit. Too bad Gino’s, Monjuni’s and Pinetta’s are all closed on Sunday. We need that red sauce, guys. Just leave some by the back door for us. Nobody has to know.

Cupcake Allie
Wouldn’t it be nice if you could reward yourself for another week well done with one of Cupcake Allie’s pocket-sized confections? Particularly one of the “Back Alley” (read: boozy) variety? We’ll have to catch you guys after we’ve survived Monday.

Chelsea’s Café
It always seemed a crime that the famous Chelsea’s grilled cheese couldn’t be added to our Sunday brunch rotation—seriously, can you imagine it with some added bacon and a fried egg? These days, though, we’d be happy if Chelsea’s was open any day of the week. Rest in peace, Chelsea’s.

Happy’s Irish Pub
A Sunday stroll through downtown might be even better if you could grab a beer and some popcorn and settle in for an acoustic set at a picnic table in Happy’s backyard. Do Irishmen back in the homeland ever really take a day off from the pub?

Highland Road Park Observatory
Nothing gears your perspective up for a new week like taking a moment to contemplate how tiny we are in our giant universe. Peering through a huge telescope to study space would fall right into the sweet spot between educational and awesome as a Sunday Funday activity.

Red Stick Farmers Market
Let’s face it: The odds of dragging ourselves out of bed for an early morning browse of locally grown goods are much higher on Sundays than Saturdays. We wouldn’t mind being able to get our Saturday morning sleep-in knowing those fresh veggies will be waiting for us on Sunday.

Local boutiques
Retail therapy makes for a perfect end-of-the-weekend activity, but it’s hard to get your #shoplocal on when half of your faves are closed. We wish we could spend Sunday afternoon picking up finishes for the new place from Monochrome or Denicola’s, or rounding out our wardrobe at Mint or Rodeo.
