Highland Coffees owner Clarke Cadzow and the coffee shop’s landlord, Hank Saurage, have reached an agreement on a new lease that will allow the popular coffee shop to remain open at its location on West Chimes Street just outside the LSU North Gates. In a statement released Tuesday, Cadzow says, “We are pleased to announce that the Highland Coffees lease has been extended and that we are able to continue serving our customers from our location on Chimes Street for years to come. … We deeply appreciate the support of our customers during the lease renewal process.”
In late September, Cadzow announced he would have to shutter the 25-year-old coffee shop at the end of the year because he was unable to come to terms with Saurage and the property’s co-owner, Edward Rotenberg, on the terms of a new lease.
The news prompted outrage from the shop’s loyal customers, who vowed to boycott any new establishment Saurage might bring to the 3,000-square-foot space. Within days Saurage offered to reopen lease negotiations. The two sides have been in discussions through a third party ever since. It is unclear what the terms of the new deal, signed early Tuesday, entail. But sources familiar with the negotiations say it is a multi-year lease.
