Yesterday, Oct. 4, was that most sacred and glorious holiday we call National Taco Day.
So naturally, I celebrated by dining at the newest taco eatery in town, Somos Bandidos, formerly Freshjunkie downtown. Though it’s sad to say goodbye to Freshjunkie, I’ve got to say, I do like the idea of someday having a taco spot on every corner.
Somos Bandidos is set up as a grab ‘n’ go-style taco bar. You come into the wood-paneled brick-and-mortar, order what you like from the menu, the friendly staff makes it on the spot, hands it to you and then you’re out the door in a matter of minutes.

When it comes to tacos, too much is never enough, so I thought I’d try three very different options Somos Bandidos had to offer.
First, I ordered a taco called The ’83, named after the nostalgic feelings the ’80s bring. It featured a hard shell or flour tortilla, ground beef, iceberg lettuce, roma tomatoes, cheddar and housemade Ortega-style taco sauce. The ’83 is spicy, tangy and everything in between, with the tomatoes and sauce giving it a rich flavor that reminds us of taco night at home back in the day.
Next, I had The Rib, made with a white corn tortilla, beef brisket, white onions, honey-lime slaw, cilantro, queso fresco and avocado. The savory flavor of the brisket comes through wonderfully and is a real standout of this taco. The cilantro, onions and avocado add great, contrasting layers.
The final taco I tried was called No Reggae, named after the owner’s distaste for reggae music. Now, as a fan of reggae music, I was a bit apprehensive about this taco. Irony of all ironies, it turns out the only thing to be apprehensive about was the name.

No Reggae, composed of a flour tortilla, grilled chicken, jerk sauce, pineapple and serrano salsa, was the most delicious taco I ordered, and one of the best tacos I’ve had in a long time. The sweetness of the pineapples mixed with the savory chicken and sauce was perfection.
Overall, Somos Bandidos did an impressive job on National Taco Day. With an affordable, delicious and creative taco selection, I have a feeling I, and many others, will be frequenting the place.
Somos Bandidos is at 303 North Blvd. downtown, and tentatively open Monday, Wednesday and Thursday, 11 a.m.-4 p.m. and Tuesday and Friday, 11 a.m.-8 p.m. Check the taco shop’s Facebook page for updates and official times.
