Fast Break: Unique sandwiches and antiques at Yvette Marie’s

Yvette Marie’s Cafe, housed inside Circa 1857, turns a simple lunch break into an interesting experience.

The menu isn’t overwhelmingly big, but choosing a sandwich here still proves to be pretty difficult—every option has some sort of alluring detail.

I was stuck between the Greek chicken sandwich (grilled chicken breast layered with feta cheese, spinach, roasted peppers and basil pesto) and the ham and Brie sandwich (Brie melted over honey-baked ham and topped with apricot preserves, lettuce and tomatoes).

But my lunch partner suggested I try the turkey and apple sandwich instead, and now it’s high on my list of “best food decisions ever.”

Smoked turkey, sliced Granny Smith apples and spring mix are piled on a croissant (or wheat bread) and topped with melted Brie and a cranberry aioli.

The tartness of the apple was a surprising complement to the rich flavors of the turkey and Brie, and the cranberry aioli added a hint of sweetness.

Just as interesting as the sandwich was the interior of the café. The atmosphere at Yvette Marie’s can’t be more satisfying for a quick, light lunch.

The walls are plastered with rustic paintings and decorations, and the tabletops are illustrated with unique designs. Natural light pours in through the windows, making lunchtime even more refreshing.

Yvette Marie’s is attached to Circa 1857, the sprawling Mid City antique store. Being able to browse antiques and artwork while waiting for my food made the experience even more enjoyable.

Yvette Marie’s also offers soups, salads and small side items. The café is at 1857 Government St. and is open 11 a.m.-2:30 p.m. Monday-Saturday.
