We taste-tested the new Pecan Pie M&M’s

Our bag had a couple broken candies that resulted in M&M’s shards everywhere. We can’t guarantee yours will look as rustic and autumnal as ours.

When a national food brand releases a new flavor that’s decidedly Southern, we at 225 Dine will of course be all over that. As pumpkin-spice everything starts to pop up at coffee shops and on store shelves, M&M’s is getting in on the fall flavors trend early with its new Pecan Pie milk chocolate candies. The new flavor started hitting shelves this month.

We bought a bag. We passed it around. We weren’t entirely sure what happened to the pecan pie in these M&M’s. Here’s our take:

“It smells like Amish cooking.”
Brittany Titone, audience relations assistant, before declining to try it

“I think that’s because it smells like molasses.”
Jessica Weimer O’Connor, audience development manager

“I have a big jar of molasses at home. That is not what it smells like. It smells more like maple syrup. But it tastes more like pumpkin pie. It’s not a taste I’d associate with pecan pie—at least not mine. Mine tastes like sugar and pecans.”
Cathy Brown, receptionist, pie maker

“It tastes like imitation fall. The only redeeming quality is that there’s chocolate inside.”
Benjamin Leger, managing editor

“The pecan flavor is too artificially intense. Sorry, M&M’s fail.”
Carolyn Valentine Blakley, senior graphic designer

“I don’t mind it, but it’s got a weird aftertaste.”
Melinda Gonzalez, graphic designer

“I’m not sure which is weirder: the aftertaste or the smell. I had the bag sitting on my desk, and the syrupy scent is so powerful I could smell it through the bag the entire time.”
Jennifer Tormo, editor

“I like pecan pie. I don’t think these taste like pecan pie. It smells like pancake syrup.”
Brandi Simmons, director of online operations

“I like it. I don’t like fruits and vegetables so of course I’ll like pecan pie. But I can only eat about seven.”
Brittany NietoBusiness Report advertising coordinator. Interestingly, seven is the amount of suggested servings per container.

Side note: We dug through our archives for a great pecan pie recipes and found this one. The only similarity between it and the ingredients listed on the M&M’s bag is sugar and corn syrup.
