Grizzly Bear

Yellow House

(Warp Records)

Brooklyn-based Edward Droste started the Grizzly Bear project in his home studio as a lark, intending his 2004 Horn of Plenty album as nothing more than a gift for friends. That record got plenty of attention for its Beach Boys harmonies and complex arrangements. Now he’s upping the ante on “Yellow House.” The songs seem like to be made out of interlocking gears, all disparate in form, but uniting to make one seamless working mechanism. Twinkling guitar lines dart around pockets of horns and swooning harmonies on “Little Brother.” A dark cloud of piano and ambient menace cast a shadow over “Marla.” If you like the intricacy of Sufjan Stevens but are looking for something a little less Pollyanna, Grizzly Bear might just make the perfect soundtrack to your day. >>More
