The Rapture
Pieces of the People We Love
(Universal Motown Records)
One of the greatest benefactors of the indie-rock hype boom, the Rapture soul claps their way right onto Motown on this release. It’s a fitting place for a band that borrows their swagger and sway from gum-smacking the girl groups of the Sixties. This disc finds them on more solid footing than the patchy Echoes three years ago. “Soft Cell” is the touchstone for a lot of the record, especially the title track, but having just re-listened to the Clash back catalog recently, there is a lot of the Only Band That Matters disco-era “punk” in their punchy dance floor songs – “The Devil” and “Get Myself Into It” could’ve come straight off Sandinista! if Rapture singer Luke Jenner had a thick accent. Unlike The Clash and Gang of Four, who mixed disco, punk and politics, The Rapture is all dance floor abandon with tighter rhythms than their competitor, making them the indie rock KC and the Sunshine Band, for better or worse.
