Seven Headed Monster (Ocelot)
The Capital City septet Secret Annexe has emerged with a more streamlined sound on their second CD, appropriately named Seven Headed Monster. Instead of the filigree-heavy nature of super-sized outfits like Sufjan Stevens or Polyphonic Spree, the band focuses its efforts solely around Rob Mulhearn’s songs, and comes up with some beautiful results. “Witch of the Staircase” is an infectious punk/funk Gang of Four stomp injected with warmth from the viola and keyboards, while “June 12, 1943” shows off both their experimental and softer sides, sci-fi sound effects mixing effortlessly in this plaintive guitar ballad. “The Bridge” and “Something Good” really showcase the group’s tight orchestration, but it’s the more straight forward rocker “Look Out Below!” that really wins you over with the mix of psychedelic and big pop harmonies.
