Nashville is not exactly known as a hotbed of soul sounds, but then the fuse of The Dynamites runs deep, back to Harlem’s Apollo Theatre where singer Charles Walker opened for James Brown and Wilson Pickett in the late 1960s. The band brings its own brand of funk to Chelsea’s Café on Friday, Sept. 26.
After the departure of long-time guitarist Jason Isbell, Drive-By Truckers got into a soul groove themselves, recording a relaxed, slide-guitar tinged new record The Dirt Underneath at famed Muscle Shoals studios in Alabama. The band performs live at The Varsity on Monday, Sept. 29.
Something of a phenomenon in their native UK since the 2006, Brighton rock band The Kooks hooked up last year with the leader of the Kinks, using Ray Davies’ studio to record the feel-good Shine On. The band performs live in Baton Rouge for the first time at The Varsity on Tuesday, Sept. 30.
A few years ago Lou Reed turned up at the MTV Video Music Awards to play with The Raconteurs, and when an announcer asked him what band MTV should be promoting more, he replied without hesitation: Okkervil River. If the Austin-based folk-rock band has outgrown Baton Rouge—it played here a couple years ago—then at least it performs live at The Republic in New Orleans on Tuesday, Sept. 30.
