Barcelona chairs. Designed by Ludwig Mies van der Rohe in the 1930s. I have used these chairs in both commercial and residential projects. We chose for our home brown leather, similar to the color of these chairs’ original design, to give them a warm feeling. The chairs are lighter in weight than they appear, are comfortable, can be pushed together to act as another sofa, and most importantly, have proven thus far to be indestructible for the kids.

Lynn Wessel painting. She is an artist from New Orleans and the mother of one of my longtime closest friends. She was a big inspiration for me when I was growing up and helped foster my interest in art. We bought this piece while living in D.C. to remind us of home without being as literal as the typical black-and-white photography of the French Quarter.

Platner table. Warren Platner designed this small side table in the 1960s. I have always liked the simple, clean, sculptural quality of it.

Coffee table. This is a base from Design Within Reach, but we created a custom top for it. The original table had inset marble, which would have broken the first time one of our kids stood on it. So we had a wood substrate made with a flush marble top.

Armoire. The armoire is a bi-fold TV cabinet from Red Door Interiors. We wanted something that would help marry the character of the exposed beams with the rest of the furniture. The beams in this room are one of our favorite features of this house. There are a number of different elements of this room—beams, brick, millwork, and walls—and though they all have different textures, they are all painted white, which gives the room a modern, warm feel.
