225 is looking for the most striking photos of 2008 that capture the spirit of our Baton Rouge, like this portrait of Spanish Town Mardi Gras icon Charles “Fish” Fisher.

Enter 225’s photo contest with your best shot!

225 invites readers, amateur shutterbugs and professional photographers to submit your best photographs of 2008 in our “Here’s Looking at 225” contest.

We’ll select our favorite images, with the top winners earning the chance to see their work on the cover of 225 magazine.

So, what are we looking for? Photos that capture the spirit of life in the 225 area code, from celebration to struggle, from the moving to the hilarious.

We’re looking for photos that reveal the soul and spirit of our people, and the character of our city.

You may only enter unpublished photos that you’ve taken yourself. Camera-phone photos tend to be of poor quality, so we prefer pictures taken with proper digital cameras.

There are two categories: one for professional, working photographers not affiliated with 225 magazine, while non-professionals may enter the Amateur category (see prizes above).

Review all the rules below. Then submit your best shots via e-mail to yourstories@225batonrouge.com with the phrase “Amateur” or “Professional” in the subject line.

225 Photo Contest Rules

• You must be 18 years of age on or before Oct. 15, 2008.

• You must have taken your photographs within the geographical area of the 225 area code.

• Your photos must have been taken during the 2008 calendar year.

• You may submit up to three original photos you’ve taken—no third-party submissions.

• You must own the rights to photographs you submit.

• Your photos may not have been previously published.

225 reserves the right to publish any entry at any time, either in the magazine, online, or both. 225 also reserves the right not to publish the photos at all.

• You must submit your entries via e-mail, either as JPEG or TIF attachments, by midnight Oct. 15, 2008, to yourstories@225batonrouge.com, with the phrase “Professional” or “Amateur” in the subject line.

• The Professional category is for photographers who have been compensated for photography services by a publisher in the past two years.

• All other qualified entrants should submit photographs in the Amateur category.

• Photographs must be of a high enough quality to be suitable for publication in 225 magazine. That means no camera-phone photos, compressed or reduced-size photos, and no digitally altered photos. Typically, photos for publication should be at least 300 dots per inch at 4 by 6 inches.

• By submitting your photos you’re agreeing to all our terms.

• If your photo is chosen for publication you should be prepared to describe the photo and provide relevant information suitable for a caption to be published with the photo.

225 staff will judge the photographs, and any prizes or awards will be given solely at its discretion.

• Prizes for the Professional category are as follows: 1st place, $225; 2nd place, $200; 3rd place, $175.

• Prizes for the Amateur category are as follows: 1st place, $100 gift certificate of 225’s choosing; 2nd place, $75 gift certificate of 225’s choosing; 3rd place, $50 gift certificate of 225’s choosing.

• Neither Louisiana Business Inc.’s employees nor their immediate family members may enter the contest.

So, does "no digitally altered photos" include no lighting adjustments in photoshop either?

If I enter your contest, do I retain the copyright to my photos???

Lighting adjustments and enhancements are absolutely allowed. To us, digital altering is more about clipping and pasting objects or rearranging compositions.

Yes, you retain copyright to your photos. You are giving us permission to publish your photo in the magazine and/or online, but ownership and copyright stays with you.

Thanks!

How do I know if you received my entry?

I submitted my photos via email. I didn't include my name, address or phone number in the email. Did we need to give you any contact info besides the email address we used to send the photos?
