Jim Urdiales, owner of Mestizo Louisiana Mexican Restaurant on Acadian, is opening a sister eatery in Prairieville, across from Frank's Smokehouse on Airline. La Mestiza Mexican Bistro—housed in the old K Michaels Steakhouse—will offer a scaled-down version of Mestizo's menu, with the exception of some new items such as the ribeye. Not to worry, however, La Mestiza will have a full duplicate bar for those mango margarita-loving suburbanites.
"This was not in my game plan; it was a total accident," says Urdiales, the next generation of the landmark Carlos Mexican Restaurant clan. "But I couldn't walk away from opening this because the spot is too unique."
Pending the liquor license, look for La Mestiza to open the second week of April. It will be open Monday through Thursday, 11 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. and 4:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m., as well as Fridays and Saturdays from 11 a.m. to 10:30 p.m.
"My quality of food will separate me from all the other Mexican restaurants there," Urdiales says. "And I want it to be its own unique restaurant, to grow into its own location. The goal is to get open, get established and feel the area out to see what the clientele is."
