Seventeen years ago, writer and publisher Neil White spent 18 months serving time in a federal prison in Carville, and to this day he says he lives by the principles he learned living there among the last leper colony in the continental United States. White’s first book, In the Sanctuary of Outcasts, has been chosen as Baton Rouge’s One Book One Community read this year.
“It has such a positive message: live simply, be honest and cherish relationships,” says Robin Kistler, director of executive education at LSU. “We’re all so busy, it’s nice to be reminded to take a step back and live an authentic life.”
Sanctuary is available through Harper Perennial press and at Barnes & Noble Booksellers. readonebook.org
