Endangered Species Day at B.R. Zoo Saturday

The Baton Rouge Zoo will honor its endangered species Saturday. The day will be full of fun activities for the entire family. Most importantly, visitors will learn why these species are in trouble and what we can do to help save them. HEAD2toe happening Saturday

Doors to the exhibit hall will open at 9 a.m. Guests can visit VIP Exhibition Suites to learn about the products and services offered by local companies. Treat your pets right this Saturday at Fur Ball

If you love to spoil your dog, you won't want to miss this weekend's Fur Ball. The area's premier pet-friendly gala celebrates well-behaved canines for a good cause. While dogs enjoy a day at the Petz Plaza Spa, owners can enjoy a silent auction, live music from The Doc Holliday Band, and food and drinks. Proceeds from the event benefit the Companion Animal Alliance of Baton Rouge. Spend all night with the Baton Rouge Zoo in the weekly Safari Night. The evening includes walking tours throughout the zoo to learn about different animals, such as the hooting owl, the howling wolves and those noisy monkeys. A better block is upon us

This weekend marks the beginning of a transformation on Government Street with the Better Block BR project. Saturday and Sunday, 10 a.m.-5 p.m. on the two blocks between Bedford and Beverly drives, residents will get to see a model of what Government Street could look like if we push local and state officials to update the roadway to a safer, more “complete street” model.

Underpass Readings at Chelsea's Thursday

Three students from LSU's MFA Creative Writing program and a special guest will share works in Thursday's edition of Underpass Readings at Chelsea's Café. The event will include readings from Julia Carey, Adam Atkinson and Emily Nemens, as well as Carrie Causey, who released a new poetry collection Ear to the Wall on Ampersand Books. Back in February, the Better Block BR public workshop gave residents the chance to say what they think makes for, well, a better block. A series of visual examples were scattered around the meeting room at Ingleside Methodist Church. Visitors were given red and green stickers and told to place them on the examples they liked and those they didn't.

'Stabbed' again

Announced Monday, Stabbed in the Art is back again and in a new location in Mid City. The inaugural event at 216 South 19th St. (a few blocks up from Circa 1857) happens tonight and it looks to be a welcomed return for the monthly pop-up art market and gallery.

'225 Dine': Homebrew competition proves a success

Despite stormy weather and chilly temperatures, more than 500 people turned out for local homebrew club Brasseurs a la Maison's first-ever "Iron Brewer" competition, held last Friday at Tin Roof Brewery. "We were totally overwhelmed by the response," says club founder Blake Winchell. "We weren't even sure that 50 people would show up." The 10 varieties of homebrewed beer on offer, with ingredients ranging from Louisiana peaches to coffee and cayenne, went quickly, with no kegs left untapped at the end of the night. The People's Choice Award went to the Chicory Stout, but the winner of the official "Iron Brewer" title went to the Red Beans and Rice brew, which wowed with savory, smoky flavor. The event, which accepted canned goods in lieu of admission, also raised more than 1,300 pounds of food for the Greater Baton Rouge Food Bank, enough to provide 1,090 meals for families in need. The success of the evening has definitely paved the way for future homebrew events, according to...

Thinking the green way

If you were one of the many at the Better Block BR public workshop last week, you know there are quite a few folks in town who have a passionate interest in smart growth in Baton Rouge. Next week, you'll get another chance to share your thoughts on smart growth and alternative transportation pathways as Downtown Development District hosts three days of public workshops and discussions on the proposed Downtown Greenway.

Painting out loud

I've been consistently inspired by Kevin Harris' Museum of Public Art project in Old South Baton Rouge. It's about as grassroots as you can get with a neighborhood revival and it celebrates the local community and all its leaders, while bringing in top street artists from around the world to add vibrant colors to the landscape.

A first-of-its-kind event for LSU, set to take place Saturday, March 9, will bring together innovative thinkers from the university and Baton Rouge community who will each give an 18-minute “talk of their life” focused on the power of ideas.

'225 Weekender': Mardi Gras in the Red Stick

The Krewe of Southdowns rolls Friday in the only Baton Rouge Mardi Gras parade that isn't downtown. This family-friendly nighttime parade, with "Time Machine" as this year's theme, will feature bands, crazy floats and tons of throws. The route starts at Pickett Avenue at 7 p.m. and meanders through the neighborhood, ending on Perkins Road at Stanford Avenue. Click here for the complete parade route and more information. And at noon on Saturday, Spanish Town celebrates 32 years of pink parading through downtown with this year's theme, "A Spanish Town Twinkie Ate My Ding Dong." Downtown Baton Rouge will become a dazzling wonderland Friday afternoon, when a half million holiday lights set North Boulevard aglow. Experience the magic beneath the 35-foot Christmas tree in North Boulevard Town Square. Kids can enjoy free ice-skating and play in six tons of real snow at the Snow Village. Roaming performers will be on hand, including a balloon artist, stilt walkers and more. You can also visit Santa's Gift Shop and listen to holiday music during an evening of visual and performing arts. Downtown businesses will offer holiday open houses and art showings. Tuesday — All four candidates in the East Baton Rouge Parish mayoral race are scheduled to take part in a live debate sponsored by WAFB-TV. It will be held at LSU's Manship School of Mass Communication and will air live on WBXH-TV (cable channel 16) from 7 to 8 p.m. WAFB/WBXH anchor Andre Moreau will moderate the debate, with candidates fielding questions from four panelists, including Business Report's Stephanie Riegel, Greg Meriwether of WAFB-TV, Matt Kennedy of TALK 107.3, and an LSU Student Media representative.
