"I always said, if I won the lottery, I'd pay someone to wash and dry and style my hair every day," she says. Helmke opened Bleaux Blow Dry Bar in March on Lee Drive near the Highland Village Shopping Center. The shop doesn't do cuts, but instead offers quick styling, blowouts and more for women who are preparing for a special event or just feeling in the mood for something new. During their visit to the salon, patrons may enjoy wine, champagne or mimosas—"We wanted it to feel very metropolitan," Helmke says. The shop also offers classes on style techniques such as braiding. —Benjamin Leger

Fashion week has wrapped, and we're still swept away by a hairstyle spotted on many a runway. Models with straight hair were rocking a deep side part, and the look is appealing and easy to copy. When trying this style, experts recommend the arch of your eyebrow as a guide for where your part should lie. Get hairs in line with a small comb, then keep it smooth with an anti-frizz product. Try Ouidad's Taming Spray, Bumble and Bumble's Defrizz, or Garnier Fructis Serum Spray, all available at specialty beauty stores.

In post–Atkins diet America, high-carb-count dishes such as traditional pasta are typically considered indulgent, only to be enjoyed on special occasions. Unwilling to accept a pasta-less fate, at-home chefs and food bloggers have shown interest in a different kind of noodle: spaghetti squash. With only 40 calories and eight grams of carbohydrates per cup, this vegetable can be baked, boiled, sautéed or even microwaved to create a delicious, guilt-free alternative to traditional spaghetti, which has 200 calories and 40 grams of carbs per cup. Toss spaghetti squash in your favorite sauce and top it with sautéed vegetables for a dish that tastes just as good as its high-carb counterpart. This squash, like others, is available locally at grocers as well as at produce markets like the Red Stick Farmers Market and Southside Produce. Click here for instructions on how to prepare...
Nabbing a new lacquer is a quick, painless pick-me-up, thanks to relatively low prices and adventurous colors. Here’s what we’re seeing for fall: rich jewel tones, fun topcoats and metallics. Also eye-catching is the new Sonia Kashuk collection at Target: five fall-appropriate formulas that ring up at less than $5 a pop.

It’s hard to get into the fall mindset while it’s still sweltering, so begin the seasonal transition with your makeup routine. Bold lipstick is a perennial autumn favorite and an affordable switch from light summer hues. We’re loving saturated colors with a hint of shimmer, like Walk of Fame by Sephora, Violet Berry by Clinique or Autumn Leaves by NARS (pictured). Another fall trend that works for all skin tones is dusty pink. We like Givenchy’s Delicate Rose, Deborah Lippmann’s I’m Every Woman, Lancôme’s Roses In Love and Bobbi Brown’s Bare Pink. Find these shades and more at specialty beauty stores like Sephora or Ulta.

Bath Junkie’s newest concoction has us whipped into a frenzy! Sugar Whip has arrived at the Towne Center store, and this recently debuted formula deserves the buzz it has generated. Prevent makeup meltdown this summer. Facial mists are a new craze in the beauty world, and for good reason. Just one spritz can supply instant refreshment as well as vital antioxidants. We've heard rave reviews about several facial mists: For acne-prone skin, the complexion-calming formula of Boscia Clear Complexion Tonic (left) is ideal. Soothing ingredients like rosemary leaf revive the visage without irritating. For combination skin, try The Body Shop's Vitamin E Face Mist, which has been said to keep makeup in place in even the hottest conditions. And don't forget the time-tested classic of facial mists, Evian Mineral Water Spray. This longstanding favorite can be used year-round for glowing skin. Find these formulas at specialty beauty stores.

Tomorrow happens to be one such day, so residents can try working out at the Y for free between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. The next opportunity for a Free Friday is July 27, so keep this tip in mind a month from now.

All style, no cuts
Blow-dry bars have caught on big in major cities, offering women on the go a hairstyle refresher, and Rachel Helmke thinks Baton Rouge women could use a break as well.

You'll emerge with softer, more manageable hair—all without splurging on an expensive chemical treatment. Coconut oil can be found at health food and specialty grocery stores.

Starting this week, customers at the Southdowns Village salon can get a custom coiffure in less than an hour for $35. Trendy blow-dry bars have popped up in New York, L.A., Dallas and everywhere in between; and now the shampoo, dry and style service is available here. Devotees book a blowout to look great for a night out or a big weekend, or just for a quick pick-me-up.
Skin repair regime change
Spring is around the corner, which means that it's time to tend to dry skin. Exfoliation can be a snap, given the help of a good sugar scrub. One of our favorites is Caribbean Therapy Body Scrub, available at Paris Parker; it exfoliates with salt and cane sugar while conditioning skin with oils from coconut, avocado and passion fruit. Another exfoliating product we've noticed is the Citrus Exfoliating Wash by Eminence Organics, available at Bumble Lane Spa.

The Gulf South's first major running event exclusively for women happens next weekend! The Woman's Hospital Half Marathon will take place downtown the morning of Dec. 9. This inaugural event offers runners the option of competing in the 10K or half marathon distance, even changing course during the event. So if it turns out, as you run, that you'd rather not finish the half, you can simply turn north to finish the 10K. Runners who prefer a shorter distance are in luck as well, with the newly added [225]K Fun Run, which will immediately precede the other races. All proceeds from the event benefit the hospital's programs and services for women and infants in the community. Attendees can also shop at a wellness boutique on-site, pick out complimentary finish line photos and enjoy a post-race party. For more info, click here.

Makeup brushes with a bonus
If you have persistent complexion woes, it may be time to break up with your makeup brushes. Notorious for harboring harmful bacteria, standard brushes can exacerbate breakouts or, worse yet, cause them to recur. Happily, antibacterial makeup brushes of all kinds are hitting the market. Try Sephora’s Deluxe Antibacterial Brush Set, which comes with its own protective case. Or pick up a Bare Minerals Redness Remedy Kit, which includes an antibacterial-treated brush and a powder to soothe facial skin. Available at specialty beauty stores.
New offerings at Tread BR
Tread BR is rounding out its high-intensity interval training with the addition of a new class. The Southdowns Village fitness studio has added Pilates mat classes to supplement the high-energy Tread class. Owner Nicole Williamson aims to assist students in flexibility, concentration, posture, core muscles and breathing during this one-hour class. In addition, the studio is adding Bosu classes (pictured), in which students use a dome-shaped “ball” for various exercises. Fans of this method say that instability makes the exercises more challenging and involves using core muscles for balance. Check the schedule here.
Raise the bar on fitness
The Bar Method is setting the tone for a healthy holiday season with its new mixed classes, which ratchet up the intensity and speed of a normal bar workout. The newest addition to the Bluebonnet Boulevard studio’s schedule, mixed classes are said to make the most of each session by shortening setup time and increasing the reps performed for each exercise. Mixed classes will be offered weekly throughout the regular schedule. Visit the website for more info.

A running event for all women
It's time to prepare for the Gulf South's first major running event exclusively for women: Woman's Hospital's 5K, 10K and half marathon. The event takes place the morning of Dec. 9 and starts downtown. This inaugural Woman's event offers runners the option of competing in the 10K or half marathon distance, even changing stream during the event. So if it turns out, mid-course, that you'd rather not finish the half, you can simply turn north to finish the 10K. Beauty products purchased in-store will be shipped directly to your home.
Latest lengths for eyelashes
What's not to love about waking up with perfectly embellished eyelashes? Beauty insiders have been putting mascara to rest in favor of semi-permanent eyelash extensions. Devotees say that semi-permanent eyelash extensions offer an answer to thin, lackluster eyelash woes. How does it work? A technician adheres each individual lash—which vary in length, thickness and style—onto your natural eyelash. To see the process up close, stop by Le Roche Bleu Day Spa, located on Highland Road, today from 5 until 8 p.m., for a live eyelash extension demonstration.
A seasonal skincare treat
Get a fall glow with a skin treatment that’s catching on quickly—a pumpkin facial! This service is currently on special at many salons and spas, including Glo Beauty Bar in the Southdowns Village Shopping Center, and The Medical Spa of Baton Rouge in Towne Center. Packed with antioxidants and vitamins, a pumpkin facial promises to buff away dull skin, leaving a visage that’s gently rejuvenated. Additionally, aestheticians say the technique leaves no visible exfoliation, allowing an immediate glow.
Two-in-one update
It's time to put your summer makeup on reserve in favor of this fall's most covetable cosmetics. Obtain a natural flush with a two-in-one lip and cheek stain. Benetint cheek and lip stain duo comes in two shades: the original Benetint (pictured), a bold rose hue; and Posietint, a poppy pink. Each provides a smudge-proof glow that last for hours. These multipurpose products provide a quick pick-me-up with subtle glamour and a warming blush, perfect for cooler weather. Find Benetint products locally at Sephora.

Double spa indulgence
Feeling frazzled? We’ve got the scoop on a spa special designed to revitalize you from head to toe. Through the end of October, Vida Pura Spa is offering an attractive package deal: a facial and massage for just $99. Stroll your way fit
Getting back in shape can be a walk in the park for new moms. Strollga is a 45-minute class that meets under the oaks at City Park. The class invites mothers with babies in tow. Participants perform light cardio, interact with their babies, and even execute a series of modified yoga poses—sometimes using strollers as props. Get the schedule and find out more here.
Red lipstick redux
Makeup professionals can attest that this season’s preferred shade for lips is the new red. Bright cherry and fire-engine reds are out; vampy hues are in. Merlot, deep raspberry and maroon are all sure bets for fall lipstick. Some of our favorite picks include Scarlet Empress by NARS, Fabulous Fig by Revlon, and A Different Grape by Clinique. Find these options, or select a variation on the trend that suits you best, at specialty beauty stores such as Ulta and Sephora.
Five minutes to trendy hair
Fashion week has wrapped, and we're still swept away by a hairstyle spotted on many a runway. Models with straight hair were rocking a deep side part, and the look is appealing and easy to copy. When trying this style, experts recommend the arch of your eyebrow as a guide for where your part should lie. Get hairs in line with a small comb, then keep it smooth with an anti-frizz product. Try Ouidad's Taming Spray, Bumble and Bumble's Defrizz, or Garnier Fructis Serum Spray, all available at specialty beauty stores.
New shoes with a bonus
Calling all runners! Through the end of the month, your next pair of shoes can benefit more than just your daily workouts. Varsity Sports has partnered with Girls On The Run, a nonprofit organization that aims to bolster self-esteem and healthy habits in girls age 8 through 13, to bring you a Buy One, Pass One On special. Here's how it works: Runners visit the Perkins Road store and purchase any pair of full-price Brooks running shoes. The store then donates one pair of Brooks shoes to a deserving GOTR participant for her first 5K. It's a win-win situation too good to jog past!

Recipe for a spaghetti makeover
Nail color capers
Nabbing a new lacquer is a quick, painless pick-me-up, thanks to relatively low prices and adventurous colors. Here’s what we’re seeing for fall: rich jewel tones, fun topcoats and metallics. Some of our favorites: Essie’s Recessionista, a rich raspberry hue, available at area drugstores; and OPI's Berlin There Done That, a complex gray, available locally at salons, spas and Ulta Beauty Supply. Also eye-catching is the new Sonia Kashuk collection at Target: five fall-appropriate formulas that ring up at less than $5 a pop.

The event is free, but advance registration is required. Learn more here, or check out the Facebook page.
Fall into bold lip color
Color that can take the heat
Manicures can easily transition from daytime to nighttime with Ruby Wing color-changing nail polish. The Ruby Wing collection boasts 18 different shades that immediately change colors when exposed to sunlight. The photochromic technology allows for your nails to glow in bright hues during the day and sultry tones at night without your going through the trouble of changing polish. Satisfy your changeable nail color preferences with Ruby Wing—two colors in every bottle. Visit their website for more information or to purchase your doubly useful polish.

Ponytail makeover
Form meets function with Emi-Jay hair ties. A ponytail holder with a twist, these elastics are gentle on hair but big on style. The soft and stretchy fabric keeps hair straight and dent-free, but it's also strong enough to keep hair in place during a rigorous workout. With seemingly endless options in color and pattern, there's one for every occasion. Try the crystal bead-accented variety for extra sparkle. Emi-Jay hair ties can be purchased at Amie's Boutique, Brooklynn's Unique Boutique, Forum Salon, Rigsby Frederick and SOHO Boutique Salon, among others.
Designer fragrance debut
Get the scent of beach in a bottle at Kiki. The Perkins Rowe boutique has just unpacked its latest shipment of Bond No. 9 fragrance. The scent combines grapefruit, bergamot, peonies, honeysuckle, sandalwood and amber. Currently, shoppers who stop by can score a complimentary sample.
Relief for athletes
Enterprising Baton Rouge athletes have developed a remedy for persistent muscle soreness—a new post-workout recovery bath solution. Geaux Soak claims to alleviate muscle pain and joint inflammation after strenuous workouts. The therapeutic solution—which can be made using hot or cold water—is infused with an aromatic blend of minerals specially selected to give your body the relief it craves, resulting in a revitalized feeling all over. The developers hint that adding one cup of vinegar to the mix yields optimal results. Visit the Facebook page for details.
Heal your heels with this
Strappy sandals, hot sand and plenty of time spent barefoot: It all adds up to feet that probably need some major TLC. Enter Butter London Stiletto Stick Hydrating Heel Balm. Heal your weathered heels with this soothing balm, which rolls on with a macadamia oil formula that’s thick without being oily. One of Butter London’s best-sellers, the Stiletto Stick promises to revive dry skin in a snap, ideal for those times that your schedule won’t permit a trip to the spa. Find Butter London goods locally at Le Roche Bleu Day Spa, Sanctuary Home & Gifts and specialty beauty stores.
Bronzing made simple
Whether the remainder of summer will see you on a beach vacation or poolside stay-cation, a great tan is essential. Thanks to new specials at Glo Beauty Bar, getting a healthy bronze won’t break the bank. Spray tan packages are now available at the Southdowns Shopping Center salon, so gals can get a sun-kissed look for less. Arrange to receive two spray tans a month for $59, or unlimited spray tans each month for $79. Both packages come with a 10% discount on all other services—manicures, pedicures, facials and waxing, to name a few—which increases your access to beauty on a budget.
Moisturize skin sweetly
Bath Junkie’s newest concoction has us whipped into a frenzy! Sugar Whip has arrived at the Towne Center store, and this recently debuted formula deserves the buzz it has generated. The sugar-based scrub works into a gentle lather that exfoliates skin, an ideal remedy for scorching effects of summer sun. Shoppers can customize each paraben-free product with their own choice of colors and scents, yielding personalized results. To top it all off, Bath Junkie is throwing in a complimentary hand spa treatment with each purchase. Hands down, it’s a smart stop for healthy summer skin.
Kissed with mist
Midweek spa breather
Make time for midsummer pampering! On Wednesday evening at 6 p.m., The Retreat Spa Salon Studio on Bluebonnet Boulevard is offering an educational workshop on all things beauty. Why visit the Y Friday
Exercising outdoors in our semitropical climate takes moxie, to say the least. As an alternative, we can head to the gym with this comforting knowledge in mind: YMCA of the Capital Area is currently running a Free Friday program, meaning anyone can gain access to area facilities on select days. Tomorrow happens to be one such day, so residents can try working out at the Y for free between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. The next opportunity for a Free Friday is July 27, so keep this tip in mind a month from now.
