On Trend: Your holiday party dress

There are really two types of Christmas parties these days (at least in terms of what you are expected to wear to them)—tacky and not tacky. I am a huge fan of the tacky Christmas sweater and rotate the couple that I own each year. Let me tell you, I get decked (the halls) out: red tights, patterned turtle necks, a big bow and of course my favorite snow man applique sweater that my grandmother proudly passed down to me (Thank you, GG!)

But of course, a tacky sweater party isn’t the only event this season you will need to dress up for. Maybe it’s cocktails and cookies or Christmas Eve, or maybe you are going to see The Nutcracker. Try out this maroon, velvet, extremely #OnTrend, skater girl dress. I will admit, I was nervous to try velvet after years of dance costumes that often featured this material and memories of those velvet pants from Christmases past, but I have seen it in every store this fall and was feeling a little ambitious.

The simplicity of the silhouette allows for the fun mesh detail at the neckline, and makes it easy to style. Jewelry can be minimal, and for these (semi) cold Louisiana nights, pair it with black tights, booties and your favorite coat, and you are good to go!

Double booked with tacky and non-tacky parties? Wear a simple dress like this one and pack your sweater in the car. Throw it on over the dress for an easy transition.
