Back-to-school season gets a bad rap. Many families describe it as “stressful,” “chaotic,” or “overwhelming.” We want to share a hack to make this back-to-school season one that’s enjoyable for your family. One key skill for managing back-to-school stress is to create room for margin.
Families often say that the school schedules—classes, extracurriculars, carpools, etc.—lead to tension and frustration. How many times have we shouted at kids to “get in the car” or “hurry up and get on your shoes!” Having simple rhythms clearly outlined, whether they incorporate a picture chart or daily schedule, allows children and parents to mentally prepare for the day ahead. Get your kids involved by letting them illustrate a morning to-do list or a weekly family calendar. Having a grasp on daily expectations keeps everyone on the same page and reduces stress.
