Soup from The Silver Spoon – Hot Lunch

When asked about favorite foods, you will often hear a familiar list: pizza, burgers, mom’s red beans and rice. For me, it is soup. And when the cold, wet winters of South Louisiana start to nip past your sweater and wool socks, the only sensible remedy is soup.

When I realized that my affinity for soup had moved beyond garden-variety appreciation and into the realm of fanaticism, I set about finding the best soups in Baton Rouge.

The Silver Spoon is the stop of choice for the “ladies who lunch.” The clutches of crisply dressed women and mothers just back from the tennis court may intimidate the lone diner more used to BBQ stands, but if you skip this up-market café, you are also skipping some of the best soups in the city.

The Silver Spoon serves a hearty potato soup every day, but the real standout is their rotating soup du jour. The Silver Spoon’s cream-based soups are always smooth and delicate, never clumpy. Of special note are the shrimp bisque and the crab and Brie, both available in a generous cup ($6.95) and an elephantine bowl ($12.95).

This is also your spot if you like to round out your meal with a plate of garden greens. The Silver Spoon Salad ($8.96/$11.95) features ample mounds of fresh lettuce and an exquisite champagne vinaigrette.
