Tate Tullier – People to Watch 2016

Owner, Tate Tullier Photography
Hometowns: Gonzales and New York City
Age:
37

What marks a good photographer is an unending desire to find a fresh angle. With Tate Tullier, you can even see that in his wedding photography—a job where other photographers might typically phone it in after a few years of slogging camera gear to wedding venues. Nope, he still finds a way to be surprising, and his excitement is infectious.

We at 225 have seen that firsthand from the many times Tullier photographed for the magazine.

And that passion, tied with establishing a second home base in New York City about a year ago (he and his wife, Sarah, also have a home in Gonzales), has gotten him noticed. He’s been working with plenty of new clients—several of whom you might recognize, including a close friend who recently took home the win on the final season of America’s Next Top Model.

Tullier’s shots have been featured in People and Out Magazine, and it’s likely you’ll see his credits in many more high-profile publications in the coming year.

• Tullier has had a camera in hand since he was 12, borrowing his mother’s Minolta X700 in the summer of 1992. “I’ve always been doing photography. Always. If not taking the photos, I was looking at them through millions of magazines and photo art books. I used to dig them out of the recycle bins at the local libraries, and yet still found so many to spend my parents’ hard-earned money on.”

• He officially started his business, Tate Tullier Photography, in 2008, juggling dozens of photo shoots each month.

• His ongoing photo series, “Tub Time with Tate,” has grown since moving to New York. The artsy black-and-white shots of nude models in bathtubs (first shot in his own bathtub in Gonzales) have raised eyebrows via his Instagram account, but more and more people from here and New York have asked to participate in the series. “I’m so grateful that it’s being respected as a form of art from both areas we live in.”

Looking ahead to 2016:
“I look forward to putting more time into my fine art. I envision taking my ‘Tub Time With Tate’ series to the next level. So many people are asking for a coffee table book, so that’s something I need to check into. The important thing is to try to enjoy what you do in life, so that’s a constant mantra I tell myself daily.”

“Tate’s humor, charisma and energy make the camera invisible. I never feel like we’re working together, but having fun, and yet bringing out the most natural and the best in photos! This is why he is successful.”
