Unleashed: Mystic Krewe of Mutts paw-rades this Sunday

This year, the Capital Area Animal Welfare Society (CAAWS)—the region’s oldest rescue—commemorates its 35th anniversary. What better way to celebrate than inviting Capital City canines to party with the Mystic Krewe of Mutts?

With a registration fee of $25 per person/dog and $5 per additional person or dog, Krewe of Mutts makes Mardi Gras parade participation an affordable extravagance. And, since registration is considered as a donation to the non-profit, all fees are tax deductible.

The 2015 Marvelous Mutts: Comic Book Heroes and Villains-themed parade rolls down North Boulevard Sunday, February 8 at 1:30 p.m. However, people and their pooches can enjoy a day filled with Fideaux-friendly events.

From 10 a.m. until 4 p.m., Bark in the Park at Galvez Plaza features booths with everything from adorable adoptable animals from a variety of rescues and humane education to food vendors and even pet chic boutiques. Pre-parade festivities include contests for the best float and costume.

What’s new at this year’s parade? Not much, according to CAAWS Past President Frank Parks.

“For 15 years, the Krewe of Mutts has been one of the city’s best family events,” Parks says. “So, we stay true to what works.”

It’s hard to argue with that success. Last year, the parade featured 150 canine krewe members, entertained an estimated 14, 000 revelers and raised nearly $18,000.

Krewe of Mutts is CAAWS’ biggest fundraiser. The revenue is essential to providing year-round operating funds for non-profit’s shelter, education, community outreach and spay/neuter programs. For more information, click here.

These are among the animals who benefit from this year’s parade proceeds.

Creature Feature

PilotPilot is shy. But once he acclimates to his environment, he’s a cuddly lap dog. He is best suited to a home without children (because he’s scared of them). He also will benefit from owners who have the patience to let him gradually become comfortable with his surroundings.

fisherFisher is a 7-year-old orange tabby male.

anaAna is a 3-year-old Plott hound/lab mix. She’s a loving, sweet, gentle soul who loves people and dogs, too. While Ana would love to have a dog buddy, it’s not a necessity. She loves all people, big and small. Her ideal home would have humans willing to give her lots of time and special attention.  She’d love to curl up in a lap, couch or bed—or just about anywhere to be near her family. She would make a great addition to any home.

sam-mainSam is a handsome 5-year-old gray and white tuxedo cat with a subtle, yet distinctive snaggletooth.

VectorVector is a 3-year-old longhaired dachshund. This young, active boy has lots of love to give. While he is on the smaller side, he’s not necessarily meant to be a lap dog. He’s got places to go and people see. Vector enjoys romping and playing with other dogs, even big ones. He can be quite vocal when playing because it’s hard to contain his enthusiasm. This sweet boy is house trained and quiet in his crate at bedtime. Vector would enjoy a family with lots of time to spend properly exercising his little body and young mind.

Daisy-mainWhen Daisy was rescued, she had an injured eye and was malnourished. Unfortunately, her injury rendered her blind in her left eye and being malnourished left her with tendency to overeat. Perhaps in appreciation of the special care she requires, Daisy loves attention. She is content to sit and let her family pet her indefinitely, purring and talking the whole time.

All these pets have been spayed/neutered, vaccinated, heartworm tested and microchipped. Many other adoptable dogs, puppies, cats and kittens are available through Capital Area Animal Welfare Society. Get more information.
