VarageSale app fosters a safer buy-and-sell community

Garage sales are a hassle, Craigslist can be scary and selling items via Facebook is hard.

VarageSale, a unique online marketplace, takes the uncertainty out of blind exchanges, using the power of social media to build a community of buyers and sellers.

To become a member, app users must request to join a local community and be approved by that community’s ambassadors.

Created in 2012 by a new mother in Quebec, the app took off almost instantly and spread across Canada and the U.S. The company launched Baton Rouge and Central/Denham Springs communities in April 2015.

The Baton Rouge community has more than 7,000 members and hosts a “swap soiree” every Sunday at 4 p.m., typically gathering for extra security at the Baton Rouge Police Department on Airline Highway. Members bring items such as gently used clothes and accessories, children’s toys and supplies, homemade crafts, electronics and even baked goods.

Local VarageSale administrator Jessica Jones says the app is more than just a buy-and-sell platform—it facilitates hobbies and fosters friendships.

“There’s so much love when it comes to being a part of the VarageSale community,” Jones says. “I’m able to help people in ways I couldn’t have imagined … but what’s amazing is to see how VarageSale is impacting the lives of our community members.”

As an administrator, Jones helps members make transactions in a trustworthy and family-friendly environment. Many families use VarageSale to gain a little extra cash, Jones says, which they can use to have fun now or save for a vacation later.

VarageSale members may schedule one-on-one meetings for sales, but many members prefer the group setting and the convenience of the swap soirees.

VarageSale is available on the iOS app store and Google Play.
