What the ‘225 Dine’ team is watching, playing and shopping for this week

During these long weeks at home, you’ve surely made a dent in your Netflix queue or listened to more podcasts than you can count.

We all need escapes. So if you’re looking for ideas on how to pass the time, a new show to get into, or some fresh tunes to put in your earbuds for your next run—we’ve got you.

Read on for what the 225 Dine team is into right now.

For some dark and intense binge-watching

‘Ozark’ on Netflix

“Viewership for Jason Bateman’s moody drama surged when the third season dropped. It probably helped that it came at the end of March when everyone was just settling in at home for the long haul. I noticed the online buzz and decided to give the show a try—and now I’m hooked. It reminds me a bit of Breaking Bad in that it focuses on a family patriarch who has gotten in over his head in some shady drug-dealing business. And similar to that other must-watch series, Ozark does’t let up in its stakes, stacking one dangerous obstacle on top of another for Bateman and (national treasure) Laura Linney’s characters. It’s also got me doing deep dives into how people from the Ozarks feel about the depiction on the show.”

What to pick up on your next grocery trip

Slingshot Coffee

“I’ve been getting into lightly caffeinated water from brands like AHA and Limitless. But since none of us are sleeping well during this pandemic, lately I’ve been needing something a little stronger in the morning. My newest obsession is Slingshot Coffee’s coffee sodas: a more potent blend of cold brew but with the fruity fizzy-ness I’ve grown to love in sparkling water. Slingshot’s price per can is somewhat comparable to what you’d pay for a fancy drink at a coffee shop—so I think of these as more of an occasional treat than an everyday thing. But in times like these, if something in my fridge can wake me up and bring me joy? That’s worth a couple dollars. Find Slingshot at Fresh Market or Whole Foods, or get it shipped free online.”

For when you need to escape from real life into a virtual life

‘Animal Crossing: New Horizon’ on Nintendo Switch

“Video games give you a fantastic opportunity to travel into a whole new multiverse, and Animal Crossing: New Horizons will be your go-to to relax after a long work-from-home day. This game mimics real life, but with animals. You’ll pay off loans to a business tycoon raccoon, interact with passive-aggressive neighbors and have a beautiful island you can tend to. One big plus: Social distancing doesn’t exist in ‘Animal Crossing,’ so I often hop on a helicopter to visit my friends’ islands to chat about our neighbors, our fruit-filled trees and what types of fish we’ve caught recently—in the game, of course.”

For a new way to do some online shopping

The Market at Circa 1857‘s live sales on social media

The urge to redecorate and dress up our homes is real now that we’ve been spending so much time inside. Fortunately, some of our favorite local vintage shops like The Market at Circa 1857 have started hosting virtual shopping experiences live on Facebook and Instagram. We’ve already seen some cool midcentury serving trays, rugs, art and more make appearances on the live streams. And we’re already imagining how to rearrange the furniture to make way for some new finds.”

What to watch when you can’t sleep

‘The Midnight Gospel’ on Netflix

“Have you ever wondered what would happen if you combined a deep, insightful podcast with trippy, out-of-this-world animation? Me neither, but now I know what I’ve been missing my whole life. The Midnight Gospel takes the viewer through a vibrant, colorful journey while covering topics like death, mindfulness and the opioid epidemic. This isn’t your average kid-friendly cartoon, and after the first episode, you’ll understand why.”
