When on the prowl for authentic Indian cuisine in Baton Rouge, you’ll only find a handful of options. But, as of this month, the team behind Al Noor Indian Cuisine has added one more option to the roster with the grand opening of their new restaurant, Daawat.
With a name meaning “invitation,” Daawat aims for a comfortable atmosphere with more focus on its buffet and a few different dishes than its predecessor, Al Noor. The restaurant, at 4855 Sherwood Forest Blvd., joins Bay Leaf and Curry N Kabob as another Indian cuisine option in the Sherwood/Coursey culinary neighborhood.
Al Noor’s success has taken off since opening in 2013, and Daawat aims to continue owner and chef Mohamed Hanif’s vision for broadening Baton Rouge’s horizons for Indian cuisine.

Hanif explains that the restaurant has launched with simply a buffet for the first month and will build an a la carte menu based on customer favorites. With more than 20 years of experience, including stints at Bay Leaf and Indian kitchens in New York City, Hanif has drawn on a wide range of influences to expand the offerings at Daawat.
Fresh menu items include chicken and lamb shammi kababs, crab and fish tikki cutlets and a lamb shank special.

“We want people to know that we’re doing something different, that Al Noor has grown and we’re ready to do more,” Hanif says.
Daawat is open 11 a.m.-10 p.m. seven days a week. The all-day buffet costs $10.95 a plate for all you can eat. For more information, call 349-8331.
