Downtown Baton Rouge boom prompts Stroubes to open Sundays. Will others follow?

We’ve all been there. It’s the end of the weekend, and you have your heart set on finishing it with dinner at your favorite restaurant. Then you remember: It’s closed Sundays.

But the explosion of new hotels, apartments and condos in downtown Baton Rouge might change that. In mid-July, Stroubes Seafood and Steaks was so encouraged by the growth that it added Sunday hours 4 p.m.-9 p.m.

So far, “it’s definitely worth our while to be open,” owner Eric Carnegie told Daily Report.

The restaurateurs promoted their new hours by word of mouth, encouraging nearby hotel staff to inform guests about the new hours.

So far, Stroubes’ success hasn’t led to Sunday openings for other downtown restaurants, but it could in the future. Tsunami is only open on Sundays during special occasions. But Frederick Nonato, one of the managing partners, says the company is always open to making changes to benefit the restaurant.

Schlittz and Giggles, Capital City Grill and Lucy’s Retired Surfers Bar are already open Sundays. If other high-end restaurants decide to follow Stroubes’ lead, it will help strengthen the downtown market, says Davis Rhorer, executive director of the Downtown Development District.
