Fast Break: Curry-N-Kabab’s spicy lunchtime dishes

Indian cuisine isn’t as plentiful in Baton Rouge as say, Cajun food might be, so I’m always looking for places to satisfy a craving for curry.

Curry-N-Kabab does the trick.

It doesn’t look like much on the outside, but you’ll forget all about that when you dig into the chicken jalfrezi curry and tomato soup.

The tomato soup isn’t to be taken lightly—I wasn’t ready for the surprising amount of spices. To me, tomato soup always makes me think of Campbell’s, but Curry-N-Kabab may have changed that definition to something more flavorful.

It almost took longer to decide on which curry to order than it took to actually eat it. The menu has more than 30 different kinds of curry, with proteins such as chicken, beef, lamb, goat or seafood, and vegetable.

I ultimately decided on the chicken jalfrezi, a tomato-based curry with onions, bell peppers and lots of spices.

Diners can choose to order their curry spicy, medium or mild. After the tomato soup, I stayed on the safe side and ordered mild.

To make my decision even more difficult, Curry-N-Kabab offers five different kinds of rice. I ended up with Jafrani rice, a slow-cooked rice with coriander and star anise.

Between the big bowl of curry and an equally large portion of rice, I had enough food for two more meals. Curry-N-Kabab doesn’t disappoint in flavor or portion size.

The chefs at Curry-N-Kabab also handcraft their own desserts including rice pudding, ice cream and Indian favorites like Gajar Halwa, an Indian version of carrot cake.

Curry-N-Kabab is open 11 a.m.-2 p.m. for lunch and 5:30 p.m.-9 p.m. for dinner Tuesday-Friday, and 11 a.m.-8:30 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. It’s located at 11904 Coursey Blvd.
