Fast Break: Kaminari’s buffet-style hibachi

They say the customer is always right. At Kaminari Sushi and Hibachi, that sentiment rings truer than ever.

While the theatrics of more traditional hibachi dining experiences are immersive, Kaminari’s buffet-style brand is immersive in a different wayyou get to choose every single ingredient that you want.

Upon entering the restaurant, you’re free to roam to the sushi bar or eat an egg roll or two before getting to the hibachi table. There, you’ll find a laundry list of ingredients, from shrimp to octopus, all on display.

You grab a plate, and put as many and as much of any ingredient you choose. Then, the cook near the table tells you to put your plate down near a designated letter printed on a small portable metal stand. You take the letter to your table, the cook takes your plate, and about five minutes later, you have a complete dish delivered to you.

I decided to have some white rice, crab claw meat, shrimp, broccoli, egg and three big jalapeños for some added spice, fried up on the hibachi. The food is grilled perfectly, with the rich flavors of each ingredient creating a savory mix. The shrimp and crabmeat are tender, the broccoli is crisp. The jalapeños really make this dish, adding a scrumptious kick after every bite.

If you’re near LSU’s North Gates looking for lunch, concocting a dish at Kaminari’s hibachi grill is a must-try experience.

The beauty of it is that the customer gets to play a big part in the flavors. You can choose a perfect go-to ingredient combo for yourself based on the flavors you know you like, or go for something completely different. It’s all up to you. The only thing to remember with food fresh off the hibachi: Don’t burn your tongue.

Kaminari Sushi and Hibachi is at 3260 Highland Road, and open daily, 11 a.m.-10:30 p.m.
