Before zipping over from Jefferson Highway and Drusilla Lane to Isabella’s Pizzeria’s storefront in the Bluebonnet Square shopping center, I had no idea there was good pizza to be found so close to my office.
Now that I’ve tried it, I’m almost wishing I’d stayed blissfully ignorant of these slices. It’s tasty enough to be dangerous to my carb intake.
The humble but roomy restaurant just off Airline Highway offers salads, wraps, sandwiches, calzones and pasta, but let’s be real—if you’re treating yourself in the middle of the workday, you’re opting for pizza. You can bring the office gang and order up a 16-inch pie, but for solo lunches, the 10-inch personal size is a perfect fit.

In addition to build-your-own topping combos, Isabella’s serves up a selection of signature pizzas, with varieties ranging from muffuletta to chicken florentine to pesto and artichoke. I picked the sun-dried tomato for a bit of an elevated twist on the more traditional margherita, and Isabella’s quickly fired up the oven for a speedy to-go. From the moment I placed my order, I was in and out in less than 15 minutes.

The sun-dried tomato pie at this pizza place comes topped with (naturally) sun-dried tomatoes, both mozzarella and goat cheese, roasted garlic, fresh chopped basil and a garlic herb sauce. Without a tomato sauce, the pizza has a light, flatbread feel, with aromatic flavors of garlic, punchy sun-dried tomatoes and a balance of mild and funky between the two cheeses. The proportions are just right for an ambitious eater to tackle the whole thing at once or work on it throughout the afternoon, but lighter diners can split it over dinner and lunch.
Isabella’s Pizzeria in Baton Rouge, one of the Louisiana chain’s four locations, is at 10330 Airline Highway, Suite B5.
