Avery Kyle won the hearts of Baton Rougeans during her trials and triumphs as a MasterChef Junior season four competitor. Now, the hit FOX cooking show is hosting open-call castings in New Orleans, searching for new contestants to represent Louisiana.
On Saturday, June 25, children ages 8-13 will file into The Ritz-Carlton at 921 Canal St. to vie for a spot on the show. Avery will make an appearance at the casting to talk to auditioners and give words of advice and encouragement.
Avery landed her spot on the show via a video audition, a feat previously unheard of in MasterChef and MasterChef Junior history. But even though she didn’t attend an open call for her audition, she still has sound advice for those who are.

Avery’s tips for trying out
1. Stay calm and focused. This could be the most important audition in a lifetime.
2. Be yourself. Don’t try to cook like the person next to you.
3. Have fun. If cooking is your passion, don’t jeopardize that by getting overly nervous or anxious.
And to those who do earn a spot on MasterChef Junior, Avery says to stay persistent.
“You can’t give up,” she says. “Don’t give up, because a lot of times it is discouraging and you’ll want to give up. Sometimes my team didn’t win on challenges and it was discouraging, but what do you know—I made it to the finale.”

MasterChef Junior casting associate Nicole Mirkoff says auditioners shouldn’t be intimidated by the skill level they see on the show because no one walks into an audition cooking like a MasterChef. The show is looking for passion and potential, she says.
