Prince Donuts stands out with its bubble tea selection and unique donuts

Prince Donuts & Bubble Tea’s walls are LSU-themed in purple and gold, but its vibrant colors don’t stop there.

Doughnuts covered in bright icing and sprinkles pop out of the clear display counter, and there’s also the unique addition of colorful bubble teas.

Located at 1750 Brightside Drive, the eatery is bringing innovative doughnuts and bright bubble tea to Baton Rouge, a city where the doughnut business is already booming.

Owner Jeong Do Kim opened Prince Donuts almost a year ago. He says the previous owner also ran a doughnut shop there, but because of lack of business, only opened on weekends.

Kim also noticed that same lack in business at first—when his only item was doughnuts. Located in a shopping center farther away from LSU’s campus, he says he knew he needed to add something different to the menu to draw customers in.

Bubble tea quickly became the solution, after a friend’s suggestion.

Now, Prince Donuts sells a variety of tea flavors, ranging from coffee to mango. The eatery offers the classic tapioca pearl bubbles but also has rainbow jelly and lychee coconut jelly available.

The teas come in 24-ounce cups priced between $4-$6.

Kim says Prince Donuts is still primarily a doughnut shop with the bubble tea being an added bonus, but he’s always willing to try out new flavors when customers ask. One of these is the chai latte bubble tea, which now can be found on the menu.

The doughnuts are also unique. The shop goes beyond the average sprinkled and glazed, serving up coffee- and green tea-flavored doughnuts. Kim continues to experiment with items like croissant doughnuts or frozen doughnuts, which are filled doughnut holes glazed or powdered and then put in the freezer.

The eatery owner is always working to create different flavors and options to stand out from the average shop. He says he’s now working on creating croissant muffins and croissant waffles.

Prince Donuts is open 5 a.m.-5 p.m. Monday through Saturday and 6 a.m.-2 p.m. Sundays. More information about offered and upcoming items is available on its Facebook page.
