Sample old favorites and new restaurants at North Gate Fest

With a slew of new eateries and pubs, LSU’s famous North Gate area has plenty of fresh faces to get to know. If you’re looking for a crash course, the North Gate Music & Arts Fest on Oct. 23 will round up old and new spots for one night of revelry.

Celebrating its 10th anniversary this year, North Gate Music & Arts Fest showcases the color and culture of the neighborhood. This year’s fest will feature showings by nearly two dozen local artists and music by Ship of Fools, The Easy, Captain Green, TOAST and Anna&Haley. And of course, the evening wouldn’t be complete without some grub.

The Chimes and Louie’s Cafe are about as classic as the North Gate gets, and both will be joining the party with signature menu items. The Chimes will serve up one of its most popular appetizers—fried boudin balls—while LSU’s resident 24-hour diner will offer gumbo, hash browns and bread pudding.

For a taste of something new, Barcadia will be dishing out its famous sliders designed by the Curbside Burgers team, and brand new spot The State Bar will keep you warm with slow-braised pot roast over garlic mashed potatoes. North Gate Fest organizer Beth Zagurski says new kids on the block Mahony’s Irish Pub and Newk’s Eatery will also have their doors open and food available.

“Food and beverage at the North Gate is about nostalgia and community,” Zagurski says. “Grabbing a coffee at Highland Coffees while chatting with a friend, ending the night at Louie’s Cafe with their iconic veggie omelet, or kicking off a game with a beer and fried alligator appetizer at The Chimes. The food at the North Gates brings generations together through the past and into the now.”

The free block party will rock the neighborhood Oct. 23, 4 p.m.-11 p.m.
