Tin Roof Brewing Company celebrates fifth anniversary

Five years ago, Tin Roof Brewing Company opened its doors, breaking ground as the first craft beer brewery in Baton Rouge.

The dream for the brewery was born out of cofounder Charles Caldwell’s time as a Colorado ranch-hand in the early 2000s, where he had access to local craft beers and became interested in the process. After returning to the South, he took up brewing and soon enlisted his childhood friend William McGehee to found Tin Roof in Baton Rouge in 2010.

The brewery started modestly, with only two varieties—Voodoo Bengal Pale Ale and Perfect Tin Amber Ale. Five years later, Tin Roof now boasts five regular brews, four seasonals, two bombers and several single batch experiments.

“It really is a huge milestone for Tin Roof. We have a great team, and we wouldn’t be here without everyone’s hard work and dedication,” Caldwell says of the anniversary. “Brewing is not as glamorous as most people think, so it really is a labor of love for all of us here.”

To celebrate, the brewery will host an anniversary party in their taproom Thursday, Nov. 19, featuring live music, food by MasterChef alum Jesse Romero and, of course, plenty of beer. The anniversary will launch the return of Tin Roof’s winter seasonal, Parade Ground Coffee Porter, as well as their House Beer series—a series of beers brewed to be exclusively served at the taproom, beginning with the five-year anniversary Oatmeal Pale Ale.

House beers aren’t all the Tin Roof team has up their sleeves. Looking forward from this year’s milestone, director of marketing Rivers Hughey says the brewers are “so, so excited” to expand the brand with additional bottled bomber options, more creative brews and wider distribution. Tin Roof beer has already reached Mississippi and lower Alabama, and Tennessee, Florida and Texas are next on the list.

“People have been so great and welcoming to us in Mississippi and now in Tuscaloosa,” Hughey says. “We’re looking forward to getting out there even more.”

“Our business has grown a lot over the last five years, and to see our little idea evolve into what it is now has really been a wonderful experience,” Caldwell says. “Most importantly, we’re thankful for all of the support from the loyal Tin Roof fans.”

If you’re a fan of Tin Roof, you can join the party Thursday, Nov. 19, 5-10 p.m. in Tin Roof’s taproom at 1624 Wyoming St.
