Tin Roof kicks off monthly beer pairing events

Got a case of the Mondays? The Tin Roof taproom is hoping it can help.

The Baton Rouge-based brewery kicked off its monthly “Mondays at the Roof” series earlier this week with a beer, coffee and doughnuts pairing party. The first event featured three rounds of coffee-infused beers paired with different doughnuts, all of which came from local vendors.

Cafeciteaux Coffee Roasters teamed up with Tin Roof to create three blends by combining its coffee beans with the brewery’s beers, and Tiger Deaux-nuts paired each concoction with a homemade doughnut.

The turnout of about 40 people was well more than expected, and the brewery is hoping that’s a good sign of things to come in the future.

Malena Moreau, Tin Roof’s director of marketing and special events, says what started as an occasional beer and cheese pairing has expanded into other clever ideas, which they hope to roll out on a month-by-month basis.

“We wanted to find a way to take your boring, blah Monday and twist it into something fun,” Moreau says.

The brewery isn’t ready to reveal the rest of its pairings for the coming months, but Moreau says the plan is to continue working with local vendors in the future.

And if Monday’s inaugural event is any indication, get ready for some fun, flavorful festivities.

The first blend combined Tin Roof’s Blonde with El Salvadorian and Peruvian coffee beans, coupled with a maple bacon doughnut. The beer mixed seamlessly with the selected beans for a smooth taste you could can and sell in the stores. Throw in the delicious donut, and it might as well have been breakfast.

Round two joined the Juke Joint IPA with an Ethiopian coffee bean, which brought a nice balance to the hoppiness most India Pale Ales offer. The pairing of the purple and gold doughnut was a sweet sidekick to the more bitter beer.

The final pairing acted as “dessert,” featuring Tin Roof’s Rougarou, an American Black Ale. The citrus-y hops worked well with the Sumatran coffee, and the strawberry shortcake doughnut with cream cheese topping ensured no one left hungry.
