We’re here to try Bayou Rum’s new rum cakes

Just in time for the holiday season and too many hours spent with relatives, you’ve got a new boozy rum cake to help you get through it all.

Released ahead of Thanksgiving, Bayou Rum has been selling 1.5-pound rum cakes via its website. The cakes come in two flavors: the Original Spiced Rum Cake and the Chocolate Satsuma Rum Cake.

The products are a collaboration with chef John Folse and his team, who developed and produced the cakes using the distiller’s Spiced Rum and Satsuma Rum Liqueur. Bayou Rum’s Lisa Cortese says the Folse crew has been “huge supporters of ours since the beginning.”

Besides their Spiced Rum Chocolates, this is Bayou Rum’s first foray into food products.

While the rum cakes are only available via the distillery in Lacassine or via its website, we at 225 Dine got our hands on some for a taste test. They disappeared fast at our offices, but we managed to gather some input from staffers between boozy bites.

FYI: The satsuma slices are ours.

Original Spiced Rum Cake:

It’s a traditional yellow cake with oh so much booze baked inside. In fact, some of us wondered if all the rum was poured on after baking. The texture was moist but not spongy—just right for a rum cake.

“Perfect cake to survive the holidays with in-laws.”
Rei Heroman225 senior account executive

“You won’t be able to pass a Breathalyzer after this one.”
Lydia Spano225 advertising coordinator

“It felt like doing a shot of rum. My tongue felt tingly after.”
Brandi Simmons, director of online operations

“The rum is very potent in both cakes, but I think it blends better in the yellow cake than the chocolate cake.”
Ryan Broussard, Business Report staff writer

“There’s no question that there is RUM in this cake. It’s yummy. It reminds me of my mama’s recipe.”
Claire Harvison, inRegister advertising manager

“I love Bayou Rum and so I want to love this cake, but the rum is so powerful! I can only eat a small piece.”
Blythe Johnson225 account executive

Chocolate Satsuma Rum Cake:

Most found this one more chocolatey than rummy and only barely satsuma-y. Everyone agreed it was an interesting take on the traditional rum cake, more crumbly than the original, but still delicious.

“I don’t even taste rum. It’s just delicious chocolate goodness.”
Jeanette Benedetto, audience development coordinator

“I didn’t realize chocolate rum cake was a thing, but I like it. This one had everything I want in a cake: moist, rich and just the slightest hint of booze.”
Jenn Tormo225 editor

“Love this one! Super chocolatey with a nice hint of rum. Could enjoy this with a rum cocktail.”
Blythe Johnson

“I wasn’t expecting to like the non-traditional pairing of chocolate with rum cake. I was pleasantly surprised.”
Claire Harvison

“Not as strong, but good. Who would have thought chocolate and satsuma rum would work.”
Rei Heroman

BayouRumcake3 copyThe basics:

Both rum cakes retail for $21.99 and come in fancy bakery boxes with Bayou Rum’s signature designs all over it. But the cakes themselves come in a pretty basic, plastic cake pan, so don’t expect the interesting grooves and curves of a classic bundt pan. Presentation-wise, unless you are a minimalist, you’ll probably want to adorn these cakes with your own toppings and icings to cover all the right angles.

Bayou Rum’s Cortese says they are exploring the possibility of putting the rum cakes on store shelves eventually. Otherwise, they plan to sell them online year-round.
