What’s fresh at the Baton Rouge farmers markets in August

August brings the last lazy weeks before school starts up again. It also means plenty of late summer produce is on display all month long at the Red Stick Farmers Market.

Look for melons, peppers, eggplant, potatoes, Asian pears, peaches, turnip greens and plenty of green and burgundy okra. Not sure what to do with burgundy okra? It’s not just for stews and gumbos. Several vendors last week were offering samples of roasted whole okra with a touch of salt and pepper. It makes for a great snack.

Along with seasonal vegetables, vendors will also offer Louisiana seafood, pork, beef and chicken. Also look for fresh-cut sunflowers and zinnias as well as flowering plants and vegetable and herb seedlings.

This Saturday, Aug. 6, kicks off National Farmers Market Week. Chef Nathan Gresham of Beausoleil Restaurant and Bar will be part of the Fresh from the Market cooking demonstration at 10 a.m. inside Main Street Market. Outside, you can enjoy tunes by the John Gray Jazz Trio and head over to the next block for the monthly Baton Rouge Arts Market.

The Red Stick Farmers Market sets up shop every Saturday, 8 a.m.-noon, on the corner of Main and Fifth streets, and every Thursday, 8 a.m.-noon, at Pennington Biomedical Research Center on Perkins Road.

See the full list of vendors at this Saturday’s market here. The list is updated weekly.
