January 2016 won’t bring much change to produce availability at the Red Stick Farmers Markets, especially with the recent warm winter weather. Visitors can expect to find much of the same produce that was available in December, except with the introduction of a few root vegetables such as radishes.
January will offer plenty of Louisiana citrus, such as oranges, satsumas, mandarins and lemons, winter greens like collards, kale, spinach and mustard greens and root vegetables such as sweet potatoes and turnips.
Widely available produce in Baton Rouge this month will also include broccoli, cabbage and cauliflower. Early season Louisiana strawberries will appear at the markets in January, but festival-worthy ones won’t show up for several weeks.

The Red Stick Farmers Market also offers local dairy products including farm-fresh milk, butter and chocolate milk, along with artisan goat and cow milk cheeses.
Other locally sourced finds at the market include fresh seafood from the Louisiana coast such as wild-caught shrimp and fish, farmer-produced pork and beef and artisan breads, local honey and homemade desserts, jams and salad dressings.
After taking a break over New Year’s weekend, the Red Stick Farmers Market returns Saturday, Jan. 9, 8 a.m.-noon, outside the Main Street Market on Fifth and Main streets downtown.
