What’s fresh in November at the Baton Rouge farmers markets

While it doesn’t quite yet feel like it outside, we have entered late fall, and soon, we’ll be entering winter. And it looks like the Red Stick Farmers Market goods aren’t yet feeling the cold, either.

There are virtually no crops phasing out of season this month due to the unseasonably warm weather. Warm-weather crops are still growing, and the market is not yet into late fall and winter crops.

Currently in season at the markets are root vegetables such as beets, radishes, turnips and sweet potatoes; leafy greens such as collards, kale and Swiss chard; as well as sweet corn, yellow squash, zucchini, green beans, eggplant, cucumbers, bell peppers and green onions.

Coming in later this month will be cabbage, broccoli, cauliflower and spinach.

This Saturday, Nov. 5, at the downtown Red Stick Farmers Market, BREADA will mark its 20th anniversary. (Read our story from the November issue all about the market’s history and anniversary.) The market will open with a Harvest Blessing followed by the ringing of the opening market bell by Red Stick Farmers Market children.

BREADA board members will cut the anniversary cake at 9 a.m. with a recognition of co-founder Suzanne Turner. The Fresh From the Market cooking demonstration will feature guest chef Peter Sclafani, co-owner and executive chef of Ruffino’s Restaurant, preparing a seasonal dish inside Main Street Market at 10 a.m. with host Chef Celeste Gill.

Musical entertainment for the morning will be provided by the JGray Jazz Trio and Lagniappe Dulcimer Society, while Bloody Marys and mimosas will be available for purchase. The Arts Market also celebrates its 18th anniversary and will be set up along Fifth Street between Main and Laurel streets.
