While it may not yet feel like it here in south Louisiana, fall has finally arrived. The cooler season has arrived at the Red Stick Farmers Market too, and it’s out with the old, in with the new for local crops.
Fresh for October are greens, lots and lots of greens, including mustard greens, kale, Swiss chard and arugula. Eggplant, green onions, yellow squash, zucchini, bell pepper, sweet potatoes, pumpkins, peas, red beans and edible flowers are also fresh to the market this month.
By the end of the month, the broccoli, radish, green beans, sweet corn and turnips currently in the fields will be harvested and brought to the market. As these new crops come in, okra and cucumbers will be phased out.

For this first Saturday of the month, Main Street Market has a load of special activities. At 10 a.m., Lili Courtney of Delightful Palate will be the guest for the Fresh from the Market cooking demonstration with a fall-inspired dish and samples for the crowd. Outside, the East Baton Rouge Master Gardeners will be on hand with tips for planting fall gardens and The JGray Jazz Trio will be entertaining shoppers throughout the morning. The Arts Market also returns this and every first Saturday of the month.
The Red Stick Farmers Market is held every Saturday, 8 a.m.-noon, on the corner of Main and Fifth streets downtown, and every Thursday, 8 a.m.-noon, at Pennington Biomedical Research Center on Perkins Road.
