Fast Break: Po-boy perfection at Po-Boy Times

An authentic po-boy experience in Baton Rouge is now a stone’s throw away from LSU’s campus. The building that once housed Chinese Combo King and Little Saigon II on West Chimes Street is home to the new Po-Boy Times.

Though the exterior doesn’t look much different than the previous restaurants, its interior is clean and tidy, with a nice layout that allows for plenty of space. While the color scheme is mostly beige, brightly colored lamps line the back wall creating a pop that breaks up the monotony. The friendly staff adds a welcome touch of warmth to the restaurant.

Just about every po-boy you could imagine with nearly every type of meat is available on the Po-Boy Times menu, which also includes salad options. The menu features a couple of desserts, the most popular of which is the flaky and rich baklava.

I ordered the grilled shrimp po-boy, which proved to be a great choice. The shrimp were perfectly sized and expertly cooked, marinated and then grilled with a buttery blend of onions and jalapeños. The onions and jalapeños, layered underneath the shrimp, provided a delicious kick to the sandwich.

As a side, I ordered French fries, and surprisingly, they were some of the best I’ve tasted. And as a French fry lover, that means something. They were of a longer, thicker cut than your average fries, and sprinkled with a Cajun-like seasoning that added a wonderfully zesty flavor.

In recent years, this LSU North Gates space has been a revolving door of restaurants, but if the quality of the food is any indication, Po-Boy Times may be here to stay.

Po-Boy Times, 166 West Chimes St., is open 10:30 a.m.-10 p.m. Monday through Thursday. Friday through Saturday the restaurant is open 10:30 a.m.-3 a.m., and 11 a.m.-8 p.m. on Sundays.
