First Look: Curbside Burgers opens Friday in Mid City

Curbside Burgers is looking to be your new hangout spot.

This Friday, the restaurant will open its doors on Government Street for a soft opening with a limited menu.

As he unveils the restaurant, owner Nick Hufft will see its journey from popular food truck to brick and mortar finally come to life.

Walking into the eatery, guests are greeted with the dining space’s centerpiece: Half of a full-sized food truck was salvaged and dismantled by artist Benjamin Bullins and transformed into a seating area. Other parts of the truck are weaved into the restaurant’s modern but cozy decor, including metal used to create some of the restaurant’s stools.

Outside on the deck area is a stage for weekend music, two bocce ball courts and plenty of seating under shady trees.

But what we’re really here for is the food, and thankfully, the menu brings back plenty of Curbside favorites—including the infamous KGB burger with a fried egg and praline bacon—as well as some newcomers.

“The KGB you can’t really touch. People would riot with pitchforks, and that burger doesn’t really get any better,” Hufft says, laughing.

The Brian burger is returning, but with a facelift: It will still have pork belly preserves and fried onion strings, but it will now have Gorgonzola cheese instead of cheddar. The Classic burger will also stay on the menu. Hufft says there will be around four other burgers on the menu that fans might remember from the old Curbside days, though he was still fine-tuning the menu during 225‘s visit.

Guests can also expect some new and healthier items, such as a lamb burger, a veggie burger and a turkey burger. On Fridays, the eatery will serve a tuna steak burger.

On Sundays, Curbside will offer brunch with breakfast-style tater tots (regular tater tots are the side of choice on a normal day) and two to three breakfast burgers along with the existing menu, Hufft says. Instead of buns, the burgers will be sandwiched by French toast or waffles. Expect bottomless mimosas and bloody marys, as well.

Speaking of drinks, the eatery will also offer alcoholic and non-alcoholic milkshakes. While Hufft is still experimenting with flavors, he says customers can expect vanilla, chocolate, mint chocolate chip, a Dreamsicle-like flavor, a red velvet and a cereal or cinnamon flavor.

But, Hufft knows regulars don’t expect the menu to stay static.

“People have come to know Curbside [with] the specials,” he says, adding that he plans to offer monthly burgers and milkshakes with different ingredients.

Curbside First LookFrom a small trailer outside of Bogie’s Bar, to participating in the Wednesday Food Truck Roundup in the Calandro’s Supermarket parking lot, Hufft has seen his small business grow. Now, he’s able to give back to the community with a full restaurant just next door to Calandro’s, offering a place for family and friends to enjoy a good meal.

“This neighborhood has given me so much,” Hufft says of the small-business support in Mid City. “It’s a blessing. I mean, it sounds cliche, but it’s the American dream.”

Curbside is located at 4158 Government St. Find out more on its Facebook page or website.
